New Processor for Win 98 computer

Can anyone suggest a new processor (upgrade) for my old computer? What will fit the socket? Where can I get information on upgrading processors? I have heard that IBM motherboards are specific to the case and cannot not be replaced with a new one, so I need to find a processor that will work with my socket/motherboard.

I have an IBM Aptiva with an AMD Athlon 500mhz processor. This originally had Win 98 OS and I recently upgraded to XP 2002 SP2. The XP OS is running very well but will not display some types of video very well: i.e. DivX- not at all, YouTube- just displays a few frames and sound, DVD discs- sound falls behind video and video is jerky, Flash video and Flash games are extremely slow even with Flash 10.

I have narrowed it down to the processor after adding more RAM (from 64 to 256) and a graphics card: PNY 5200 GE Force Nvidia chipped.

Any help is appreciated.

I'd keep the budget to zero dollars.

Here's why. In my part of the world I see Pentium 4 machines for free on freecycle every week. Most have 20+GB hard disks, 256MB RAM so these would be an upgrade to your machine. And if you check freecycle in your area the price is acceptable to the budget.
