How to permanently erase hard drive

I am disposing of a pc and want to erase its hard drive first. Used the Windows 98 CD to reinstall the OS, but it didn't reformat the hard drive.

How do I reformat the hard drive, and is this the easiest way to permanently erase all my data?

computer starts up but will not get past system check screen

This computere was passed on to me. It has windows 98 (flashes) during start up. It checks system 'stuff' but will not go into the OS screen. What can i do to reformat it and use it. I have operating discs and have tried windows XP

You need the Windows 98 cd and software registration number. Load the cd, restart the computer, and watch the screen for a prompt to start the computer. Choose "start from cd," not "start from hard drive."

If you want to erase all data of your HDD ,,left lick on the drive which u want to format,,Click on Format...Click on Start...Dont check in the box of ...(Quick Format)...
