Difficulty loading pure DOS - OS Win 98SE

Hi,

Windows is loading alright. When I press the DOS icon on my desktop programs menu I am able to access the MS Dos prompt screen C:\windows. However when I try to go into pure DOS by pressing start/shutdown/restart in DOS mode, the screen shows: c:\>c:\program~1\creative\CISND\DOSDRV\APINIT.COM sound blaster(R) PC 1128 Installation Driver, Ver 2.72 Copyright -----. PCI Audio@ port e800.IRQ 10

At this point the screen hangs. The DOS ver is 7.1. I have a Windows startup floppy but no Dos boot up floppy. Would appreciate any solution

Use the boot menu and try the DOS command item.

If you see error messaged, edit the config.sys, autoexec.bat files as you see fit.

Given this OS is now 7+ years old and has not been offered for 5 years, I'll guess you have the skills by now to edit these files and remark out the lines that bother you.

Knmadan,

There's just one kind of boot diskette, and it boots in MS-DOS (if the BIOS is set to boot from A: first, and if there's no error on it). So that wouldn't be a problem.

Of course, the screen shouldn't hang in the sound driver, nor in (one of the) commands later on in autoexec.bat (not sure which one is offending here). So something must be wrong somewhere.

The suggestion by Bob (edit config.sys and autoexec.bat to pinpoint the problem) is excellent. But you could simply start by renaming those two files, because generally they aren't necessary for anything important. But that might depend on WHY you want to boot into MS-DOS in the first place, and you don't tell anything about that. So we can't help you about that at the moment.

If you feel you could use more help, tell more. The contents of these two files (copy-paste from Notepad) could be relevant.
