defrag trouble on Windows 98SE

I cannot defrag my kids computer, 500mz Pentium3, 384ram, 12gb hd, custom built, running Windows 98se. It gets up to 4% and tells me to run scan disk, which I do and it does the same thing after running it. This has repeated itself many times, I even reinstalled the OS. Replaced Norton commercial virus (had error message about it when installing 98se again) with McAfee, courtesy of Comcast. Have run adaware and spybot to clean up for any malicious files, found Alexa and removed it, still no joy. Help, anybody, please!

Try the workaround (SAFE MODE)

Probably have too many programs running in the back ground!!

Hit the Cltr+Alt+delete,end task on all programs except Explorer and Systray.Withe those programs running it will continue to restart for about forever

your virus protection plus any programs running in the background. Defrag will not work on 98se if anything is writing to the disk while it is running.
