Ok i installed linux ubuntu to my backup harddrive. Used wubi. My intention was to take out the orginal harddrive cause it was only 40gb and swap it out for the 2nd harddrive. cause it was 250gb. when took out the 40 and put in only the 250 i get the c:/bootmgr error. if i put the 40 and 250gb in i get both boot options. did i install ubuntu wrong? is there away to install it ona back up drive and have it as the only boot option or does it only work if there is a windows hdd present?

Your install would have the boot info on the boot drive as well as the second drive and since it takes both to boot, you can see what happened.

Why not install again after you have the hard drives arranged the way you like?

i was using wubi

i was using wubi so it installed as a second opertating system. i dont have a dvdrw to put it on a disc so i need to install from wubi to second harddrive which i did correctly i just missed the boot for the 250gb. its on the right harddrive theres just no boot command, it needs windows to boot. i see on a ubuntu forum what i did wrong now. i also updated the laptop post with info. found out what was wrong at least happy

DVD media and drives are pretty cheap compared to all the work of data recovery and more.

Time to catch up on the hardware.

Since you didn't have the DVD and media, I suggest you arrange the drives as you like and install from an USB FLASH DRIVE. It's noted at this link.

Ubuntu, in this case, is like a windows application when you use wubi install.
