Linux forum: Just playin' around with Umbutu

Like I said in my original post I downloaded and played with Umbutu but didn't find it very user friendly, (i'm not used to typing in all of the commands and prompt)so I thought I'd also try Mandriva,(hmm same thing) there's things that I'm just not grasping so after many hours of playing with both os's I came back to this forum and investigated other options and discovered Linux Puppy. This Little Program Is A HIT! Puppy is so small it runs off of the computers RAM and is Real Fast not to mention being simple for a Linux Beginner to understand and learn the basics on and is easily customized. I think I'll go ahead and create a 20 Gig partition and install Puppy on my hard drive and later move onto Umbutu or another os.

I've yet to use the command line also. It there if one chooses to dabble in it but why bother unless you plan on writing your own applications etc.

I was merely suggesting command line should not necessary to install Linux OS. But I am glad you got the right attitude, yes learning is part of the fun.

I have a sony vaio p11zr which runs windows vista very slowly, my other pcs run windows 7 which is ok but the vaio which is a beautiful little machine for travel but was grossly overpriced, never gets used becaus of its speed I could install windows 7 on it but it is a very expensive product and if it dos'nt work it is more wasted money. Do you think the linux os would improve matters.

Thank you for your quick reply, believe me you do not want to experience vista. will try your suggestions as you say its an option that will not cost lots of money. If it dos'nt work the vaio can go on ebay but it is so good to look at and more versatile than a tablet at the same weight.

i recommend if you want to learn linux use kde, its the most customisable of all the desktop environments and will give you a chance to see the true power of the linux kernel.
