Ubuntu Question

I recently purchased a Dell laptop with Ubuntu. I was wondering whether I need antivirus, antispyware, and a firewall. I am brand new to Ubuntu, and would appreciate information for a novice. Thanks so much.

None of that.

I use Mandriva Linux since 2000 and always ran great.


As far Linux in general...

No viruses, no add-ware, none of that stuff.

Tried to go to the worse sites that you can imagine, click on every add and pop-ups. Have not caught anything yet or either signs of slowing performance.

Another thing that Linux does not have that MS does is Defrag. The File System does NOT need Defrag. The key is to keep it below 95% full and will not fragment.

But in general, Linux does not need it.

Also does not have a Register like MS does, so there are not hidden Hot Keys or Reg Hacks, Reg Edits, hidden Register Installations or any of that.

But you can install antivirus so you will be able to find and remove windows viruses from removable media and help windows users in this way.

Firewall (iptables) do not hurt to set up too, some Linux users have it, if you feel like you do not have something more interesting to do.

Thanks so much everyone for the info.

I am unsure what you mean by removeable media and helping other users.

I am a true novice. I actually got Ubuntu by mistake. Dell offered to exchange the laptop, but I decided to learn how to use it. When I read about Ubuntu, I liked the concept and philosophy.

Is an Antivirus not to protect the Linux system, is to protect MS systems by stripping malicious codes from E-Mail or any Shared data and to prevent spreading malicious codes.

Put it this way... Lets say that you are immune to a certain decease but you get checked out once in a while so you do not spread it around. happy
