Linux forum: which one to download?

which one to download?

i want to download opensuse11.2,
i found "http://download.opensuse.org/distribution/11.2/iso/" for download, but there are lots of link to download.
i am confuse about two link
1) openSUSE-11.2-Addon-Lang-i586.iso
2)openSUSE-11.2-Addon-Lang-x86_64.iso

my system configuration is :
processor -intel core2duo
motherboard -intel 846 original
ram -2gb
hdd - 250gb


i 'll be grateful if anyone suggest me which one to download among this or the right one which is compatible with my system.
any reply will be appreciated !

The second one or 64 bit.

And you asked if it was compatible but I only saw a CPU, ram so for what you told SUSE will be fine. Many get confused when it comes to wifi or such but that was not in your list.

You have the 64 bit CPU

And the 64 bit version is not restricted to AMD so get the best version for your CPU.

openSUSE-11.2-Addon-Lang-i586.iso

That is for Intel CPUs that still on 32 Bits. x86_64 is for AMD64 Bits. The x86 means that has codes for X(meaning 586 chip architecture and up)86 and up since the AMD 64 can support them.


History lesson...

On the Intel Chips started with the 8086 and went to the 80286, 80386 and 80486. When it was time for the 80586 Intel could not Patent numbers so they came up with the Pentium, which it was a 80586 if you follow the naming convention. That way, the other chip manufacturers could not "fool" the users selling 80586 type chips. When the 80286 came out the people dropped the 80 out the number sequence and started calling them by the last 3 digits.

When Linux came along, on the distro name, it included the Architecture that was meant to work.

Hence, x586 and up and x86_64.
