Linux forum: ubuntu, ps3 and thumb drive

ubuntu, ps3 and thumb drive

I know that the ubuntu can be installed on the playstation 3,
and i know that on a pc you can run ubuntu off a thumdrive.
So what i want to know is, can you run ubuntu on a ps3 off a thumb drive inserted into the usb port of the ps3?

In lieu of any more qualified answers from people with PS3s, I'd say it's unlikely. I haven't heard of people booting their PS3s from thumbdrives. Besides, the PS3 doesn't boot the operating system directly like your PC does; it actually uses a hypervisor (a kind of small virtualisation operating system) to run the real operating system.

Plus, I believe the Playstation has to be made aware of the existence of the operating system before it will boot it. This involves installing the operating system to the hard disk.

I could be wrong; I don't have a PS3. Your best bet would be to look at Google and see if there's a HOWTO. If there isn't, then it's probably not possible.
