Where Can I Download Linux?

I recently got an old computer withount an OS and am looking for a free one. I know that linux is one, but I can't find a download site for it sad . If anybody can help, please do.

Yes, I have a new macheine with all the best stuff. i an just looking for an OS for this old one so that it is actually usable and isn't just a waste of space in my room.

I've been thinking...
Could I put it on multiple 3 1/2 floppies and move it to the hard drive, then install it?

or put the HD in a case with internet and CD and install it there and then move the HD back to the old one?

Out of curiosity, what distro do you guys recommend for a more.. robust system?

I tried Gentoo and much enjoyed it, but it seemed not to get along too well with some of the hardware, particularly the video card.

IWill MPX2 motherboard w/ Dual AMD 2400+'s
Radeon 9800 Pro
180GB HD connected via a controller card
Audigy SB
Basic off the self network cards, connected to a Microsoft router

Those are the basic essentials.. It's a gaming workstation, I do a lot of DVD burning and video editing, and file compression, with the dual cpu's, and game with the video card. Linux seemed excellent, so long as I had no problem sacrificing some ease of work and most all my ability to game.. This no longer the situation, or a way around it? Tried this around Jan.. Ah, and XFree86 seems an antiquated way of doing something, even to an untrained observer..

I find Linux since about 1993 was robust so that's not the base issue. But for the originator of this thread, their question was answered.

Later they revealed they had no CDROM drive and 16M RAM in the machine. Sadly, this would not be suitable except for LOAFs. (Linux On A Floppy.)

Search on google.com for download sites of different distributions of Linux. If you don't care -- here is the download site for Redhat Linux (I like this distribution)

Hi Trevor,

You will need a hi-speed connection (dSL or broadband) and a cd burner/cd writing software. A good place I highly recommend for anyone new to Linux is www.distrowatch.com There you can read about the many flavors of Linux as well as links to their web sites. They also sell CD's of the various versions quite inexpensively if you do not have a fast connection. There are even versions of Linux that run straight off the CD and never touch your hard drive so installation is not necesssary to get started.

click on the distro you want, and it will show you how many discs it takes to install. then on the left it will have two buttons, one for all the mirrors and one to download the .iso file. click on the mirrors and look for a link to a college closest to you like duke or whatever else may be there, they tend to have the fastest downloads.

I work in a computer retail and customers tell me that Mandrake is the easiest to learn, they also have a MandrakeMove CD that you can get from Mandrake's website. This will allow you to boot to linux under windows, and never install linux.

I've had success with the Ibiblio linux archives - http://www.ibiblio.org/ - there are several distributions available including some for floppy disks only.

AMIGO LINUX
200 mb on the HD
16 mb ram suggested

I am goint to save it to the HD through this computer and then use it in the old HP.

And i'm off to do that!

hi, a good distrobution for a nuub. would be SuSE.com,fedora.redhat.com,or mandrake.com, Im guessing you have broadband. If you don't. get the cd's. its way too big to download without broadband. for a noob i would say SuSE is the best choice, except for a slow computer. if so use fedora core. for more choices visit linux.org and follow the distibutions link.

Go to www.redhat.com, click on the "Fedora" button at the top of the page. The next page has a link to sites that you can download for free. Easy install, easy configure. It auto updates itself. It is a large download. 4 CD's. 3 install and one rescue cd. If you have broadband, about 7 to 10 minutes each, maybe longer if the ftp server is throttled back because of the load on the server. Best to download at night.

At first you must decide what distribution do you need. As for me the simplest choise was the Ubuntu linux - it starts working "from the box"
