Some questions about Linux ...

Hi everybody !
Maybe you didn't see me on this forum... I'm more active in the laptop forum section.
My neightboor told me about Linux... I have an old computer ( Pentium III 800 MHz, 320 MB PC-100, 3DFX Voodoo 16 MB VRAM, 40 GB Hard-drive, Windows XP Professional ). I would like to discover the Linux World.
So, I downloaded two versions of Linux.
First, I downloaded Linux Ubuntu 6.06.1. Then I read somewhere that the Linux Xubuntu was better for old computers with a low-end configuration ( as my old PIII ). So I downloaded the .ISO file. I burnt it to a CD.
Is there a better ( free ) version than these two ?
I have already made my partitions :
1. Windows XP Pro - NTFS - 30 GB ( I have to transfer my documents from my laptop ).
2. Linux SWAP Partition - 100 MB
3. Linux EXT2 - 9.9 GB
I made my partitions with Symantec Partition Magic.
I have one problem : when I boot on the CD ( Xubuntu or Ubuntu ), I got an error message : Unable to locate RSDP.
What's RSDP ?
I tried to isntall Xubuntu in text line and OEM way.
Always the same problem.
How can I install Linux ?
Thank you very much !
