is the design, development, and management of a website.
The first step is design. You'll want to get with a designer to help pick out colors, layout, and look & feel of the website. There are methodologies that will work better in an e-commerce setting to help push sales. Someone experienced in that field will be able to help you make those decisions.
The next step is development. Once you know how your website will look, you'll want to develop it. You'll take the design and turn it into a functional website. Another component to that is functionality. What's nice about Wordpress is that lots of people have already developed pieces that you're looking for in form of plugins https://wordpress.org/extend/plugins/ so you might want to check there first to see what's available and what you need custom developed.
Lastly, Wordpress allows you (or anyone you recruit) to easily manage the website content. This is where you'll save a lot of time and money, because once the website is developed, you can manage the content yourself.
The simple answer is yes, Wordpress is suited for e-commerce websites, however, if you dig deeper, you'll want to really specify the requirements of the site in what it needs to do. Then you'll want to compare your assessment with the offerings of both Wordpress and Joomla. Since they are not the same, one is very likely to do more of what you want out of the box. If that solution sounds attractive to you, then dive in and move to the next step.
