You may have heard talk of HTML meta tags on the Web, most likely in connection with search engines. This is because one of the common uses of meta tags is to give search engines additional information about your web page when they index it.Do you have any ways that can take advantage of HTML meta tags for SEO purpose?

Apparantly, the meta tags are no longer used by the larger search engines such as Google and therefore do not really count for SEO. However, for the smaller search engines you may still wish to continue using them. If you decide not to use them, then it is advisable to withdraw them from your site completely.

Meta tags aren't really useful anymore

Search Engines such as Google, Bing, Yahoo, Baidu (I think) and some others don't use Meta tags anymore for SEO. They use keywords, backlinks, PR and content originality (google Panda)

It's still good practice to use meta tags, but they're not entirely useful anymore. You would be better off using those keywords and keyword phrases within the content itself. H1 tags, titles, through the articles/info/pages etc

But it doesn't work for SEO (Search Engine Optimization) which is all about getting PageRank. The high pagerank you have, the closer to page 1 on searches for specific keywords and keywords phrases you will be.

It's a snippet of HTML code that belongs inside the <Head> </Head> section of a web page. It is usually placed after the Title tag and before the Meta keywords tag (if you use one), although the order is not important.

The proper syntax for this HTML tag is:

<META NAME="Description" CONTENT="Your descriptive sentence or two goes here.">

If you're using a content management system (CMS), look for a field to fill out that's called Meta Description, or possibly just "Description."
