Acquiring quality links

Hello everyone,

I am new to SEO and have been doing a lot of research lately. Something that I've read A LOT is acquiring quality links on page with a high ranking. BUT....how does one go about getting their link on these pages??

Here is something that I read on a LinkedIn group discussion:

"These factors together are far more important than simply the total number of external links that you have to your site.

So, the first step is to identify websites with a high page rank where you can place a clickable link to your website. For these links to be of a high quality they will need to be Do Follow links. These are links that Google will follow when crawling the website which contains your link."

So I'm hoping someone can help me and answer a couple of questions.

1. How do I get my link on these high ranked pages? Do I email them? Call them? and do I need to pay for it?

2. What does "Do Follow" links mean?

create good content/tools and automatically a lot of folks out their will start linking to you. Paid links will get you banned sooner or later.

DoFollow tells the search engine to follow that link your linking to, NoFollow says to ignore the link. There's a big debate between users who say it makes a big difference in search engine ranking and the ones that say it doesn't matter. If you Google for DoFollow vs NoFollow, you'll find some interesting blog posts and articles. It's then for you to decide which side you believe happy

do- follow vs no- follow

Trying to please Google is a lost cause. When it comes to how they work they are more secretive than the CIA!
One day we are encouraged to get only do-follow links, next day the advice is to acquire a mix of do-follow and no-follow.
Some say only look for relevant links, others say go for anything (quantity is more important than quality.)
Is META still useful? Google says yes and no.
The answer? Build a good site with content people want to read. Comment on other blogs. Interact with the blogging community. It takes time but is more productive and satisfying than trying a lot of cheap tricks.

Create your own web 2.0 sites with good content and link to your page that needs improved search engine visibility.

Look at the following platforms:

Wordpress.com
Blogger.com
Squidoo.com
Weebly.com

There are many more.
