Advice to get away from image maps

I use an image map for a tradeshow floor plan. What I am trying to do is get away from this image map. You can see the graphic here http://www.lvtravelshow.com/images/vegasfloorBlank.gif
Basically each square has a link and a tooltip when rolled over. Each block will be either "taken"(which is shown by darker color) and "available"(the light blue color). When the user rolls over a taken box, it shows a tooltip and also is a hot spot with link.
I'm having a mental block and can not think of a quick way to achieve this.
I actually started to build this out using divs and their positions to create a grid of divs but is taking a little longer. So I was wondering if anyone had a tutorial or website in mind that has something similar. Or, maybe a better way to do this than Divs.
Any ideas might help me move past the mental block.
Thanks in advance
