Windows XP forum: Network path was not found

Network path was not found

I am running a four node wireless network in my house. All the computers are running windows XP pro/home and all can browse the internet fine. The wired computers can browse shared folders ok too. The wireless computers cannot, however.

1. All the user accounts are the same on all computers
2. The workgroup name is the same on all computers
3. I can ping all computers

However, when I do: start --> run --> \\computername
it gives me the aforementioned error.

In addition, when I browse to my workgroup, I can see all the computers there, I just cannot access the computers that are connected wirelessly. Any ideas? I am stumped.

I see this all the time with people using Norton Internet Security. It doesn't automatically include the local IP range in the Trusted list. You need to manually configure the Firewall to add the internal IP range (192.168.x.1 - 192.168.x.254) to the trusted list.

I don't believe that I am running norton internet security. I do have norton antivirus, could that be causeing the problem? I know it is not a problem with the windows firewall, I checked by removing the firewall and no change.

WLAN?

I am not sure what that means. I know that before a few weeks ago, I had no problems sharing files, then I added on more computer... and kaput!

Since I have not changed router settings in the meantime, I did not think there was anything wrong with the settings, but I am not sure what you mean by WLAN activated, could you explain?

is the setting in your router that when activted allows wireless PC or lap top to surf on your connection.

I am not sure what router you have but in mine which is SMC I have the WLAN disconnected because i do not have the second wireless PC, yet.

There is a place in your router data base to enable the WLAN and indicate the number of DHCP clients.

Suggest you call the router manufacturer and they can walk you through the proper settings inclusive of allowing the additional wireless PC.

I have configured the wireless settings on my router with an encryption key, and configured the computers correspondingly. Both wireless computers can access the internet without problems, but they both, even when only one is connect to the network, have problems with local network file sharing.
