Pls HELP!!! 100% CPU usage. PC very slow

Hello,
Pls someone help me. My PC has 100% CPU usage and can't get it down. Even when I've no application opened. I tried to do msconfig and unchecked those that i didn't need at the start up. But upon restaring windows, it tells me something like XP is running on diagnostic node and needed to change the same to normal on msconfig. when launched msconfig to change I can see the unchecked startup applications are checked again.(Not by me)
I've got xp sp2 and VCOM virus application with net defence firewall and ghost surf.

Please help.

my suggestion is you should turn off system restore, untick all start up items again, and boot up in safe mode then run AV software

Disabling Sys Restore

Click Start,Control Panel,Perfomance and maintenance then System Restore,then in the left hand side,is the link for settings, click that and then you can disable system restore. Just remember to turn it back on again when you get done doing the other things. Good luck.

The "diagnostic mode" message when you reboot WinXP after changing a setting in MSCONFIG is normal. There's an option that tells MSCONFIG not to give you that message again (as I recall, it's a check box right there in the MSCONFIG window). Set that option and you won't get the "diagnostic mode" thing when booting WinXP again, until you change something else in MSCONFIG.

The part about the unselected items in MSCONFIG being reselected doesn't sound right, but I'm not sure if it's an indication of a problem or not.

As for your CPU usage being 100 %, how do you know that? If you've checked it in the task manager, have you also checked to see which process(es) is using all the CPU time? That might help identify the problem.

Bring your system up in Safe Mode by pressing the F8 key on boot. If CPU use does not peak at 100% then you have a pest.
