XP hangs on re- start

My friend has a brand new XP-SP-2 installed with Athlon64 2800+ processor on a 160GB [split 4 ways]HD and with 1 GB RAM.
Running ADSL which is one of the Canadian equivalents of High Speed.
AV fully current and scanned clean as well as Ad-Aware and Spybot both current and scanned clean.
Windows firewall has been set to allow his trusted programs.
On the second day of use we noted that after the PC had been on for something in excess of 10 mins it would not re- start normally and we had to use the 're set' button to force it to re-boot.
I remember reading something about how XP 'writes to cache' on re- boot or shut down and remember experiencing the same problem myself some 2 years ago when I first got XP.
Remember also going somewhere in the O/S and 'enabling' the 'write to cache' function which resolved the problem, but cannot for the life of me remember where it was that I went.
Can someone please help.
Am i in the right direction?
thank you
