Windows XP forum: Disabling Start-Up Processes

see what background processes are running in Msconfig by clicking the Process tab.

Click on the letter for each process and scroll down the list.

You can disable some services that run in the background. Goto Start > Run, type in services.msc and click OK. In the Services dialogue, click the Extended tab at the bottom, and highlight each process for more information. You can use this to decide which processes you can disable, or set to manual.

But beware, some of these services are essential for Windows XP to work properly. But some are safe to disable. EG I have disabled the first in the list, "Alerter", because it is an Administration tool to send messages to other users/computers, but since I am the only user of my PC on a small network, I don't need it.

It gives you an easy interface to stop programs from loading. Some will reload and you will need to go into the program and stop them manually, but it does a pretty good job overall.
