Windows XP forum: files i cant open

files i cant open

I have a HP pavilion ze5600, OS: XP home edition. Its pretty loaded but must have something missing. I crashed it about a month ago so its clean. I get emails with attachments I cant open. Like .pps, ram, .dat etc. I also know most of the people sending me these files only have the bare basics on their computers and are also on XP home. So why cant I open the files. Is there a program I need to buy or download to open these kinds of files? Im tired of being left out. Any help is kindly appreciated.
