Windows product key

Hi there all,
I wonder if anybody can help me. I am having some trouble with a computer at the moment. Basically I have been trying to get a computer that's been in the cupboard for a couple of years now up and running again. The computer came up with a blue screen when turned on. The screen diasppeared after a second and the computer restarted. I could not get onto desktop even in safe mode. The computer is mine and my familys we have owned it since new but we cannot find any receipts cd's or the product code needed. I went and bought a windows XP cd that came with a cd with drivers also. I bought CD off ebay for just under £10. I have got the computer up and running and internet connected etc but I have a box in the bottom right hand corner coming up with "This copy of windows is not activated". I have to activate it before the 30 days are up or I will no longer be able to use the computer until I do. I do not have the product key and my computer and tower do not have it on the back of them. They have other numbers but not the 25 digit product key needed. I have tried several things - I found a couple of product keys online and used one of those but it comes up with incorrect key. (I know I probably shouldn't have used a random product key off internet). I also downloaded 'Belarc Advisor' which I thought would have found my ORIGINAL product key but instead it found the one I got off a website. Can anyone give me an tips or info on how to help activate windows? I know I can purchase a new key and/or xp software but I don't see why I should have to do that when I had a genuine one in the first place I just can't find it now.
Any help would be much appreciated, thanks
