Windows xp home edition

I bought this IBM thinkpad that has windows xp home edition installed. I I was trying to tether it with my cell phone which didn't work. I so I closed out and shut down. I the next day a friend of mine told me where I went wrong. I but when I booted up it went traight to safe mode. I I have tried everything to get safe mode off. I tried the f8 button I found that there was a bit error with (IBM PM Device), so I followed instructions given to me by the Microsoft Windows help centre they told me to delete IBM PM device and to reinstall. I tried to but can't because it's in safe mode and won't allow it. I have tried every possiible way to turn it off but it continues to boot up in safe mode. I how do I get off of safe mode PLEASE HELP.

I could not tether with XP too.

Lucky me. A few months back we had to reload a machine with "XP". We could not connect to our WPA2 WiFi or tether. After a day of updates from Microsoft and a few drivers finally we could network.

If the OS has been damaged by other advice, just reinstall from backup, system restore or such. It's new to you so why not start fresh?
