how to format exterior HDD for WinXP use

I'm helping a friend get her older PC working again after her hard drive crashed. I was able to install a new 250GB HDD and her WinXP operating system.

I couldn't figure out how to get the PC on the internet to install the MS updates. I am working on it at home and I tried an ethernet cable from her PC to my router, but I just didn't know how to make the connection work. I haven't worked with WinXP in years. Before the crash the PC was using the internet from my friends home so she should be able to do the security updates.

I also have an iomega 160GB external HDD I can give her so she can back up her data. It no longer works with my computer that runs Win7. I used it with an older computer. I couldn't just plug and play it, so I think it has to be formatted for use with WinXP and I don't know how to do that.

Any help with getting the external running for her computer will be appreciated.

It could be the fact XP is not updated.

XP has this 127GB volume limit until we update it. This drive is over that size so why not update XP first and then try the drive again?

Windows XP connects with any router via a (Ethernet) (patch) cable out-of-the-box, provided that box contained the driver for the Ethernet card in the PC. That need not come from the Windows disk. If it doesn't, it comes from a (driver) disk that came with the PC or the motherboard or the card.

Any Windows XP PC will recognise any external hard disk that works on another Window PC (Windows XP, Vista, 7). Nothing special is needed for that. If it doesn't run with your Window 7 computer, it won't run either with her XP computer. But you didn't tell why it doesn't work no longer, so it's difficult to say what's wrong with it.

What does Disc Management (standard Windows functionality) say about this disk? Google XP DISK MANAGEMENT or WINDOWS 7 DISK MANAGEMENT depending on what PC you decide to use.

it could be that USB devices on that PC only work until you installed the USB drivers that came with the PC or the motherboard. Try a simple USB-stick to see if that's the problem.

As Bob said: only SP2 or SP3 recognise disks > 127 GB. That can be an issue also.

Hi,
First of all as regards to internet usage I think you've forgotten that XP requires you to install drivers. So first install the drivers on the new XP copy that you have installed. So try and install the ethernet drivers from the mobo CD.
