Can't get sound to work in a new Windows XP install.

I just installed Windows XP Professional on my older computer, and I can't get sound to play. The system sounds work, but no other sound seems to work. In the sounds and audio devices section of the control panel, it says the Realtek audio controller is not installed. I've tried to install it from the CNET site, but it downloads and then says the file is corrupt. Where can I get a good version of Realtek audio manager? Or is there something else I should do instead? Thanks!

As an example read the next link and notice that on many machines you must install the MSUAA after the motherboard drivers but before the audio driver.

My question is this. Given how arcane the Windows XP install is, has it's relevancy passed? That is, given how unfriendly the install is and how many posts you read about it, is it time for something better?
