Why does a data CD (mostly pdf files) show up as an audio CD

I was initially able to use Adobe Reader to open pdf files from this CD, but lately all my computer can see is an audio CD. I cannot now get a directory listing of its contents.
At one point when the disk was usable, I was browsing some pdf files from it at the same time I was listening to some music using iTunes on my PC. For unknown reasons, my PC crashed with a "blue screen of death". Subsequently, when I put this CD into my drive, it began launching iTunes.

If it's just an incorrect autoplay setting you could fix that. An autoplay setting could confuse your average user. Let's find the autoplay autofixer. Link follows.

Autoplay fixer reports it can't solve problem

Thanks for the suggestion. I downloaded and ran the Autoplay fixer and directed it to look at the appropriate CD drive. It then did whatever it is that it does, but reported "problems" after telling me to insert the suspect CD and try to reproduce the situation.
So, I keep looking for a solution.
By the way, Windows Explorer is launched whenever I spin up a new CD, and WE things that the CD I used is an audio CD.

I see it finds this post but since this is a documented/discussed area I'd use prior discussions at this point.

If that fails, it's down to an old drive or a very corrupt OS.
