Cannot run chkdsk Win XP Pro SP3

Cannot run chkdsk Win XP Pro SP3 full updated.
Tried several times to run chkdsk via My Computer, C: properties, Tools, checked both, Restart.
"Windows cannot access volume"
Also tried RUN, cmd, chkdsk c:
Restart
"Windows cannot access volume"
Other progs:
AdAware, AVG 2013 (free)
Comodo Firewall
Malware Bytes
CC Cleaner
Keyscrambler
Disabled all Java on browsers
Could one of these progs be locking me out?
Any thoughts on repair or work arounds?

Boot into "repair mode or recovery option" using your XP install disc. Maybe, its present if you hit F8 during boot-up to access it that way. The point being once in repair mode, you should or better be able to run CHKDSK then and attributes In most cases, I tend not to run it from the running OS but that's me. If you have a XP repair disc, that too should be able to run repair mode. if you don't got one, make one while you system is up and running. This is NOT about reloading the OS, but its repair.

Try it from Command Prompt

Reboot and press F8 about once a second until you get the Advanced Boot Menu. Then select Command Prompt. From the prompt enter chkdsk /r /f . After it runs, I'd boot to Safe Mode and do a full system scan with the antivirus program.

Won't boot in Safe Mode

Tried sever time to boot in both "Safe Mode" and "Safe Mode with Command Prompt". Attempts to load 30 or 40 drivers and than just locks up. Have to shut down with power switch. Hate doing that!
I need to run some errands now, but later this evening I will try to "repair" off of original install disc, SP1 or 2.
Any other thoughts?
