Fix for "Running Shutdown Scripts" Delay in Windows XP?

I have a laptop I use for personal stuff so I'm the only user. It's a Dell Vostro I got to do some volunteer work and is loaded with Windows XP Professional, Service Pack 3. I opted for XP when I got it a couple of years ago because I was running some slideshow software that was not compatible with Windows 7.

It has run fine for years and it still runs fine. My recent problem has to do with shutting down. When I shut it down, it reaches a screen that says "Running Shutdown Scripts" and takes 5 minutes to shut off. I have two new things running but this started after I had been running them for over a week. I loaded Bitdefender security software and I replaced Acronis True Home 2012 with 2013. It will shut down eventually but I am worried I have done something to hurt my PC. I've been reading all over the place about fixes and am paranoid I will do something I cannot undo.

I have read that a clean install of XP is a last resort. It seems the shutdown scripts are not always necessary but that doesn't help me understand why I'm getting hung up all of a sudden. I use cleaner software daily and I did a defrag this morning. Neither helped.

Any input is welcome. I am open to changing settings that won't create more issues for myself but I consider myself a fairly literate user who knows nothing about settings and programming.

How much research have you done on your PC?

That is, did you go get a tool like HIJACKTHIS, run the log report then research each item listed to know what it does?

This is your PC so you should know what each line does.

I don't run such. Why did you add such?
