"Display" Settings Won't Stay "Large Fonts"

Repairshop people are understandably stubborn about using my 8 Recovery disks, use their own, and I always have trouble in less than a week. Have diabetic low vision, have enlarged fonts and icons several times but they reset themselves back to small.
Using a 2002 Compaq Presario XP Home, long as I can. (Everybody knows there are newer ones.) Do I have to buy "Driver Update" or did they just do
something to the Settings thinking I'd pay again?
Found things like "Recover" programs in Recycle Bin, they forgot to Empty! I have instructions how to re-install AOL McAfee version, we pay for. Should I do that, and scan, first of all?

Clarification request: Clarifying q. "Display" Settings Revert Back to "Small"

To clarify a bit, I've printed out 25 pages from this site about this subject, people usually trying to set "normal" size fonts and getting "extra large". I try to set "large" or even "extra large" and mine reverts back to "small.
There are lots of suggestions in the 25 page thread, and I just wonder if anyone has any more.

I did Update Security Essentials and did a Full scan, as first step, no threats detected. If I do a System
Restore, I'll have to reinstall AOL 9.7, so will first consider some of the other previous suggestions. Using
XP Home, 32 bit SP3, afraid repairman who wouldn't use my own disks made some mistake. Has it ever happened to anyone? TIA

This morning, the font size changes I tried to make last night may have finally worked. At least here and on AOL.

One of the Previous Thread replies said his changes succeeded much later, much to his surprise.
Thanks in advance if anyone has any additional ideas. I've obtained lots of tech help here.
