Reformatted, Reinstalled XP- Now no ethernet recognition

I'll be honest- I haven't touched windows in years.

A friend asked me to wipe out their virus ridden HP Slimline, so I did so. I reformatted and reinstalled XP Home edition, everything seemed to go smoothly.

...until I went to connect to the web. For some reason, there is no connection- as far as I know, it's not regonizing any ethernet- even though there is a connection.

I've trolled through tons of drivers- both from HP's site, and the modem's...nothing seems to work.

Is this a net adapter issue? Where should I turn?

XP's install is not for most of us. It may be time to move on if the owner does not want to ask HP how to install XP. Here's an example chat with HP.

I don't want to upset you but XP is from a time long ago where folk put up with such nonsense. It's time to move on.

Unfortunately I don't think they're in the market for upgrading- the computer is used merely for web browsing, and I'm sure as heck not gonna buy them an upgrade.

I was doing this when I was 13, and I've forgotten 10 years later. It's gotta be something simple.
Maybe I'll have a chat with HP, that's a good Idea. Thanks for the response.

Boot up Ubuntu and use Firefox there. This neatly sidesteps all the nutty driver hell hunting.
