Windows Movie Maker

When trying to open Windows Movie Maker I get an error message saying "Unspecified Error", that's it, nothing else. Is there anyway to diagnosis this error so a fix can be found?

Yes, but didn't fix the problem. This error message is so vague; it's hard to figure. Can't find anything at the MS Knowledge Base.

googled and checked a few of them, but haven't got time to check the rest of them. It appears that your are not alone with this. Did this coincide with an sp2 upgrade?

No, this is prior to SP/2 and even prior to Windows Movie Maker 2. I did install Windows Movie Maker 2 hoping this would fix it by rewriting over what file that had become corrupt. But the install of Windows Movie Maker 2 did not fix the problem.

My bet is that the file is incompatible with WMM or you have installed CODECs that Microsoft doesn't work with.
Read http://forums.afterdawn.com/thread_view.cfm/48608 about uninstalling all but MS CODECs. Start there and work up.

Scouring the web for the WMM "Unspecified Error", produced this fix that worked. Why it works I have no idea. But I did edit the Environment Variables. This is weird and makes no sence, but it works.
Control Panel\System\Advanced\Environment Variables\
environment variables of TMP and TEMP to not have a space in the destination so
%USERPROFILE%\Local Settings\Temp
becomes
c:\windows\temp

The issue of CODEC selection isn't a MS issue.
