Dell Laptop Display

About a year ago, I connected my Dell Inspiron laptop to our TV to watch online movies. The Nvidia SW supports dual screen viewing. Later, we decided to view them directly from a blu-ray DVD player, so the laptop connection is no longer used. But now when I close my laptop, the screen goes black and does not return when it is re-opened. The CTL Panel settings for Power option say to do nothing (when the cover is closed). After investigating, I found that Fn+F8 will restore my display, albeit with my desktop icons all rearranged (easily fixed).

Why does this happen? I've checked all the Nvidia display settings and they are correct, so I now have to keep the cover open when the laptop is moved.

Ideas appreciated.
