I am running XP and I cannot get any of my programs to open.

Since you haven't given us any details (e.g. what messages you get, what you deleted, what you've tried, etc.), you leave us with the only answer we can give you. I hope you've backed up your system. If you haven't I'd recommend booting to Safe Mode and seeing if I could copy any data I wanted to save to a flash drive.

I was able to get my firewall up and running again.

I can not download anything from the net. I have tried to download Avast from Cnet and can not get it to do it. When I try to use other programs windows says it can not open them and where did it come from.

Such damage comes from users that "delete" apps rather than uninstall them. The shortcuts and menus may not be removed and the new to Windows folk will wonder why they don't run.

And with all the malware out there it's not enough to have a firewall and antivirus. The users must not go to shady sites or open email attachements and a long list of other things.

However there is a new type of user out there. They think that because they have Norton they are protected and are in a word, reckless.

That's why I get to reinstall the OS far too often.
