My screen is stuck on "I can't find a CD Drive". Help!

I reinstalled Windows XP Professional on a new hard drive. I didn't format the hard drive. I thought they came that way. Everything was fine until I allowed an install of a HP update. It automatically restarted the computer before I could install my drivers. Now I get a message that it can't find a CD ROM Drive. I went into BIOS to make sure it's booting from the hard drive & it is. I press F12 & then F8 but not one of the options work...not Recovery, debugging, safe mode, etc. I have no idea what else to do. Can anyone help?
I have a Dell DXP051, Windows XP Professional 5.1 SP 2, Intel Pentium CPU x86, 2 Processors, Speed 2793 MHz, Hard Disk Total Capacity 465.75 GB, Available Disk Space 2.99GB, Total Virtual Memory 2.0GB, RAM 4GB, IE 6.0.2900.2180 Cypher Strength 128 bit, Modem Conexant D850 56K V.9xDFVc, Wireless Connection with Time Warner Cable - Road Runner, Adapter Type Ethernet 802.3 Intel (R) Pro/1000 PL Network Connection Service Name: elexpress, System BIOS Dell Inc. A02 10/28/05, SMBIOS Version 2.3, RADEON X300 SE 128 MB HyperMemory, Wireless USB Logitech Keyboard & Mouse, IE 6

Does the BIOS show a drive?

If so, try the usual CODE 39 fixes you find on google with "XP CODE 39" as well as a boot to safe mode to remove all CD drives you find in device manager. On reboot, I find it often finds the drive unless it's truly gone.
