how to BIOS boot ubuntu to run virtualbox? long story.

ok. a long time ago, my dad's computer broke, lots of weird things happened and it's only about a fifth as fast as before, tops. it runs windows XP professional. i pestered my dad about getting somebody to fix it, but i never got around to it. so one day, while my friend was fooling around with some of his USBs, installing linux onto them, and i thought, maybe i could run linux off my dad's computer, install it over windows, and run virtualbox off it with a windows xp/7/some other kind of ISO (never windows 8!) so it would be back to normal. kind of. so anyway, i set up ubuntu onto a USB on a different computer, using linuxlive, and then tested it on the same computer, and it worked, but when i tried to launch it from the BIOS menu, it came up with heaps of options that i didn't understand. could anybody help me out? i could provide some screenshots if you need.
