XP just keeps booting

A friend has an old Dell Dimension E510 desktop computer running Windows XP Home Edition. He downloaded an update to his Blu-Ray player from the Sony web site to a flash drive. When done, he said he was told to reboot (?) so he did. Now, whenever the computer is turned on, it starts to boot, gets past the Dell splash screen, churns for several seconds then starts all over.
I tried disabling the restart on system error but that didn't make a difference. Also tried booting with last known good config but that didn't stop the cycle either. Short of formatting the hard drive and running system recovery, is there anything else that we can try? I removed all external devices except the monitor keyboard and mouse but it didn't make a difference. Any suggestions would be welcome.
