freezing cursor

Does anyone know how to solve the problem of a cursor that freezes every 10 seconds? It's usually more than just the cursor--it's impossible to close windows, type, etc. whenever this happens.
I have a Gateway M520 laptop w/ XP. This problem has been present almost from the first day I got the computer. Initially, the laptop had to be on for 2+ hours before the freezing started. Now it occurs within the first 30 min. I have to keep rebooting to be able to use the computer.
The laptop is new and I've had antivirus software on it from day one. The online Norton AV check did not find any viruses, nor did AntiVir or AVG. (I've changed antivirus software 3 times because I read that that may cause the freezing.)
I've also checked all the CNET forums for similar problems, but no descriptions quite match what I'm experiencing. I called Gateway, but the quality of the advice given varies greatly, and whenever they don't know what the problem is the solution is the same: reformat. I consider that a last resort, and am not sure that would solve the problem. I just finished downloading updated drivers, installing software, etc. and have no desire to waste another week getting the laptop up and running.
Thanks for any suggestions!
