Windows XP forum: Downloaded trojan remover now cant use internet

I get the messgae Windows cannot find 'c:windows\system32/ewstore/rstrui.exe'

I guess what i really need is to know how to reconnect my access to the internet. I get the message cannot display the webpage. Is there an easy way to verify the connection and repair?

We can get that back. Have your XP CD handy and use SFC /SCANNOW (google that for more details.)

I know of no simple way given the story so far. Or rather I have no way to pick which repair I'd select without details about the trojan. It could be a DNS HIJACK which has one cure and it could be a browser hijack which I'd use something else.

Unless there are more clues you might get upset as we try twenty different fixes.

Unfortuneately I was not bright enough to know what trojan was the problem, and as this laptop is now about 5 yrs old I don't know where the orig disk is located. (I know.....my fault and stupid)

Is there a setting somewhere I could check to see if my system is configured to access the internet? I do show a good connection to my wireless. I am hoping that if i can at least get back online it will be a good starting point. I am not sure how to check that my connections/settings are correct and I don't want to change anything else to try and make things worse.

We have the IPCONFIG /ALL command line and it's output. But I find users to not be able to interpret the output. But it's what I use to see if the IP addresses are proper.

I put that in the run box and got the message "windows cannot find........

SFC /SCANNOW and have your XP CD handy.

--> Having that CD is not optional. You might get lucky and there is an i386 folder but given this old OS has been around this long I may not think of sharing that detail as by now the owners have come up to speed.

What's not funny is when a new person gets to use XP for the first time. Many write "Are you kidding me?"
