My desktop is a Gateway DX442XP
Win XP pro SP3
Intel Core 2 Quad
2.4 Ghz
2.97 Gb Ram
The machine will boot up normally to the desktop screen and will exhibit the hour glass for a minute or so and then shut down. Full unrecoverable black screen, but the power light stays on.
In order to restart I have to shut off the UPS because I can't even make the computer shut down.
After it restarts the same thing goes again and sometimes it will stay on, sometimes it will shut down as before. That can happen 3 or 4 times and then it will stay up and work normally all day long.
I use Microsoft Security Essential and keep it up to date. I have also run the free Norton Security scan and it only finds tracking cookies.
I'm wondering if anyone has had the same experience and if they fixed it.

Google this -> BAD CAPS
You have described a very common symptom of an issue that is a plague in electronics today. At least you can inspect for this issue. I have made ONE ASSUMPTION and that the machine is stock.

But I wonder about this because once I get it to hold it works continuously without shutting down.
I would have expected that if it was the fault of "bad caps" it wouldn't hold up for any length of time. Isn't that true?

The symptom matches. The story is interesting and the problem has spread to millions of PCs, HDTVs and more "things."
It can confuse those that haven't read about it.
Yes, the symptom is spot on. Hard starting, works afterwards.
