Windows XP forum: Need help! final stages of XP factory restore: im stuck!

But this points to a REPAIR INSTALL which is not a FACTORY RESTORE?

Okkk so good lookin on this but first I can't even get to the home screen anymore because of this installation process and so I tried safe mode still nothin...but I was able to still access the cmd from thy installation screen and I got to step 7 and it was kind of complicating but I think I got it....it had controlset001-005 but 001 and 003 only had one folder called service. 002,004, n 005 had those steps from #6 and followed though step 10 but and close the cmd but since there isn't an error message I just shut the computer down and restarted nothing else I could have done it loaded back up to that error message and I can't do anything!!!!! The mouse doesn't move I'm hitting buttons and nothing!!!

this computer has been down for like 2 years i was just now trying to give it another go...i believe service pack 2 but not 100%. I got all the cd's from dell because luckily you can get them for free 1 time. Yes it doesnt recognize the cd drive whe your on the home screen. But the big issue is even if i let it load up to the home screen it is sooooo slow it takes like 20min just navigate to the start menu and when selecting something. I am reinstalling it by following the directions i was giving by them by just hittin F8 when start the computer and from that menu it has an option to restore to factory setting and ive gotten that far but then under the installing steps it says exactly wat it said in my statement above "Then it says copy files from: and it has a drop box but the only thing highlighted is "GLOBALROOT\DEVICE\CDROM0\I386" and i try to just use that but it wont take it so i have no idea where to find this information??

its more complex as i stated above i use F8 and click factory restore i should need anything it just acts like it needs to know the path? to where it might be located on the cimputer but imnot that savy. it says....Then it says copy files from: and it has a drop box but the only thing highlighted is "GLOBALROOT\DEVICE\CDROM0\I386" and i try to just use that but it wont take it so i have no idea where to find this information....and thats in the final stages of reinstalling from factory setting so im very close i just dont know how to get this information??

Not unusual today with all the malware, rootkits and more. You'll have to use the restore media (CD or DVD) next.

By the way, only the maker has that information to fix a failed recovery partition. I've seen hundreds of discussions with upset folk that demand that others know how to fix a failed recovery system. So far the answer has been to restore the drive "image" and that image is not on that hard drive!

awwwww man so if dell has that information is it attainble by calling them and giving them the serial numbers and what not am i entitled to that or are they gonna and say i have to pay the this much for that because if so its just not worth it to pay a good amount of money when i can just go buy a new computer you know. I know alot about using the computer and navigating but as far as getting in depth and fixing thm i dont know much ha.

Every time you call in for this they sell you restore media. But it does make me ask where the media is and with today's machines we get to make our own...

Don't know of I'm following correctly I called fell and had them resend me all the CDs, but it wouldn't upload them from the home screen or at all so it really did no good. What I don't under is if you restart the comp and hit F8 it has a restore to factory setting button but it does no good! Makes no sense???

Given how malware and more can corrupt such a system, my question back to you is why do folk expect this to work? (F8)

What is this UPLOAD FROM THE HOME SCREEN? That's a new question so tell more.

well i expect F8 to wok because why else would it be there....you hit F8 and specifically says restore to factory settings...should be able to click and it run its process but i guess not. I just mean whenever i got logged in and your main menu/home screen pops up (start menu, all your files, etc) and i put the cd in nothing happens and i can force load it by clicking on the drive it just does nothing

My biggest thing is i just figured someone would know of a somewhat easy way to restore it to factory settings because like i told the guy above its no use sending this in for repair if its gonna cost well over $100...might as well buy a new one but thats a shame when you spend $600 on a computer and buy a nice monitor and it goes nothing...just frustrated

You are right. Folk today are expecting things to work. It's likely they didn't live through the days of DOS, Windows 3.0 and 96 to XP.

XP and these restore systems work under the best of circumstances so when they don't work we have other ways to load the OS.

But if you expected trouble free operation and everything to work, I fear that you might be very new to PCs. But that's not a bad thing. I think folk like this are good for the industry. The industry has been going with "it's working, ship it" for many years.

no im pretty good at navigating myself through a computer have been for years im just not good at all the numbers/letters classification and internal breakdowns of a computer....i didnt think it would be easy because if so i would of figured it out i just figured somebody would know a way to help me get this thing corrected

To restore from the restore media.

I may be repeating myself but the onboard disk to disk restore does break. AND no maker seems to offer a system to fix or restore that!
