Dell has an onboard restore system that you may be able to use.

System File Checker. Open a Command Prompt and type:

sfc /scannow

SFC will check all system files and if corrupt or not found, will replace them. You may need the XP CD.

I did as you suggested, and it scanned the system files. Took about 20 minutes and when it was finished the scan box closed. I'm assuming that means no problems were detected. Help and Support still won't open.

Where can I get a copy of Windows XP?

I'm running Windows XP 2002 Home Edition with Service Pack 3, but it came installed on my computer, and the disk didn't come with it. Can I download a copy somewhere and use that? If yes, where is a good place to download it from? Thanks. Ed

Sorry, if I had known that I would not have offered that idea.

Machines with a pre-installed OS (mostly Windows) often remove repair options we see for the full version.

Looks like you'll be doing this the way the maker intended. Hope your files are safe and then start over.

Microsoft markets the full version of XP and there are a lot of features that you get with that full version.

Laptop and machine makers can get an OEM version but only if they support the product. To cut the support costs many makers will strip out items like NTBACKUP and not offer any OS repair tools (I've seen SFC removed among other things.)

So when the OS gets too dinged up for the usual quick fixes you are left with the reinstall.
