Started yesterday. When I turn machine on it starts normal with one beep and then starts scrolling normal start info, but before scrolling is complete the process locks up. HD is not running when it locks up. I manually shut down and restart, and system boots into mode choice screen. If I enter normal start it recycles to same screen. If I choose one of the other modes the system runs a driver check and stops at ..multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)WINDOWS\system32\drivers\Mup.sys...every time. After a few off/on tries the system will boot into the checking file system screen, which I let run to the end. System then boots through the normal startup process. The disk sector it references is 1848-16F8.
System is running XP Pro SP3 with all updates and IE8.
AMD Athlon 2500+ with 1 GB RAM, Gigabyte Radeon 128 video card and an ASUS mobo.
Once started system runs normal. System is protected by Norton 360, fully updated.
I have the original XP program disk, but am not sure it is an error in the start-up program. Can someone help diagnose the problem, and recommend what I need to do to get back to normal operation. I have backed up all the data.

The problem with mup.sys is that the problem may not be with mup.sys. I am not at all sure. But when mup.sys displays as the last driver when booting into Safe Mode, does that display mean that mup.sys was the last driver that successfully loaded and it is the next file not yet displayed that has failed, or does it mean that the process failed at mup.sys?

Very informative post. I have not added any new equipment or drivers, but there was an extra user last week and I need to check if they added any drivers. I printed out the information on the links you sent and will start trying each one tomorrow.

Started trying the recommendations from you and Bob Profitt plus ran two different registry scanners. I did not do a BIOS flash because I do not feel competent to do one, nor am I sure my MOBO has flash capability. Also, my system was marginal for overclocking so I did not do it when originally set up. I did find out that no new drivers had been installed, at least not in the last few months. I ran Chkdsk and it noted three errors, but chkdsk/f was not accepted so the errors have not been fixed (am I using the wrong command?). I have also checked the PS which is 450 W and only a few years old. I looked at the caps and there may be an issue with them although the system seems to be operating at it's normal speed. I also found a lot of dirt on the heat disapating shield for the CPU and will clean them thoroughly when I risk a shutdown. One other point, about four months ago I began getting frequent "Hi memory usage by Internet Explorer" messages. Could this be tied to my new problem and just be an early warning I missed? Thanks.

The machine won't boot in the morning or takes a few tries.
The symptom seems to match here.

As you see older machines, things like this do happen. I've traced such to bad caps, bad CPUs, bad memory, old power supplies and well, bad parts.
You do have a clue the HDD is having issues. But I can't find where you put in a new one.
