XP Pro validation key or Upgrade to Win 7 ?

I inherited a system with a bootleg copy of XP Pro, it runs but takes forever to boot. I attempted to make it genuin but Microsoft no longer has Get Genuine for XP.
I am not computer savy and not sure what to do? I can buy
XP Pro on eBay for about 70 bucks and it comes with a key
Would that work? Or shoud I upgrade to Win 7 I ran the compatibility win 7 deal it said the system could run it

In the US I believe that is (800) 936-5700.

Apart from that it is your choice. You haven't told us anything about make and model so we can't tell you how it will work with Win 7, but in general, the older the system the slower it will be with the newer OS.

I am always cautious about eBay offers. If you believe this is a genuine retail, (not OEM), version of XP with a genuine product key, then why not?

The system is a custom build no name, has a AMD Athlon 64 3200+ single core processor, 6 gig DDR2
Nvidia GE Force 7960 GS video card, Thats about all I know about it. It has lots of neat programs so I would prefer to keep the XP Pro if possible..

The XP Pro is service pak 2, the system also has a thermaltake 450 watt power supply and a Zalman dual heat pipe cooler on the video card. Someone put a few bucks into this one back in the day I estimate it to be from about 2006.
