Auto uPnP

When my XP Pro boots up, what I think is some kind of automated PnP searches for new devices. It finds three printers I do not have and installs them. It makes one of them the default printer. I cannot change the default printer without deleting it. But of course when I boot again, it reinstalls the printer and makes it the default.

How do I turn off this auto search and install?

I searched in Help on my system and only found how to turn on auto search. I backtracked the help and I only found indications that it was not turned on.

but XP would only invoke Plug and Play if any USB devices were plugged in.

Are any USB devices plugged in?

Sometimes I plug my iPhone in. But not all the time. My keyboard and mouse are USB. Funny, I didn't pay much attention to it, but when you said that, I have noticed the non-existant printers it is finding are USB printers. I only have network printers.
