I wiped my hard drive several months ago and tried to install Windows XP Pro OEM (Someone gave me this computer and I wanted a fresh start.) This didn't work, so I formatted the hard drive. I got a weird error message when reinstalling, so I left it for several months and haven't really touched it. Now I am trying to install Ubuntu 11.10 on here, and after it starts up, I get the message "bootmgr is missing press ctrl+alt+delete to restart" I recently took the graphics card out of that computer and put it in another one, then put it back in because it didn't work, and I am sure that I reinstalled it correctly, as nothing would be showing up on the screen otherwise, right? I installed two computer literally two days ago with the same Ubuntu CD, and I tried multiple disc drives. No external media (USB) drivers are attached, so its not trying to boot from them. How do I install Ubuntu trying to boot from the CD?

That error message "bootmgr is missing" only relates to a problem with an OS booting up, that is, there must be an OS installed for that error to happen, and yet you say you wiped the drive then formatted it.
It looks like the wipe and/or formatting failed in some way. How did you do those?
I would wipe/erase with something like DBAN, then make a fresh install.

Thanks Mark. Now I realize that when I started to install XP again several months ago, there might have been some beginning form of an OS on there. I'll try another wipe and then try installing again.

Bob's link shows that the XP Setup CD can do this for you, delete the partition(s) and format before installing.

If I format the drive then install XP I can indeed end up with this message.
Read http://www.blackviper.com/Articles/OS/InstallXPHome/installxphome1.htm and look at STEP 5.
I could remove all the partitions there and then let XP's installer take care of the partitions and formatting and avoid this issue.

Thanks Bob. Ill use this when I wipe the hard drive next if the default windows doesn't work.
(NT) To me, it seems you didn't boot the Ubuntu CD.
