Why does My Documents no longer display in My Computer?

Yesterday, when loading my computer, I received a notice that there was an error loading my profile. I'm unaware of what the specific error was, and when the computer loaded a generic profile instead, I turned the computer off and turned it back on, and all seemed well.

Today, I've found that the My Documents folder no longer displays in the My Computer window. It still appears as a link in the "Other Places" menu at the left, and can still be opened without error, but it no longer appears as an icon under My Computer.

I'd appreciate any help that anyone can provide. My information is:

Windows XP, Home edition, Version 2002, Service Pack 3.

Yup. Corrupt profile issues.

It's a very old problem to which Microsoft never did issue a repair tool. Let's find what Microsoft tells us to do next.
