Have Winxp SP3 and Word 2003. Recently, I am getting the following error every time I open a doc file with Word: "The command cannot be performed because a dialog box is open. Click OK, then close the dialog boxes to continue". So I click OK and then I can edit/save/print the file as usual.
Where is this "dialog box"? I have reinstalled Office 2003 and run sfc /scannow to restore my system files, but neither fixed the problem. Tried 2 system restores, but those failed to restore.
Ideas appreciated.

Norton may be expecting the service pack to be installed. But then again, the number of times Symantec software has been buggy over the years is legendary.

Thanks, Mark. In that writeup, Method 1 will work (I found that procedure after hours of troubleshooting), but that means I cannot use double-click to open a Word doc (undesirable).
But here is something interesting. I have Norton AV set to scan Word docs when they open. When the problem occurs, I notice that the virus scan is running (on bottom of screen). When I click OK on the error msg, the scan completes, and Word can now open the file. By shutting off that option in Norton, the problem goes away!
But the mystery continues... on my wife's PC, her settings in NAV are the same- to check the file on open, and the problem does not occur there. The scan finishes in 1 second and Word opens the file with no errors. This problem occurs on my PC with all files, small and large alike. So some setting must be on that prevents the scan from finishing. Either that or my Word template is suddenly defective, so NAV never finds the end of file.

I think your answer may right but i'll be share with my friends who have the same problem after testing myself.
