Installing a copy of Windows XP

I am trying to fix a friend's computer after removing the internet antivirus pro virus and have a problem where upon boot up the computer basically freezes for around 15 to 20 minutes where no programs will work. All the programs show on the desktop but upon clicking on them they will not open. I have run a number of scans and no virus is left in the system. The only thing I can think of is that somehow the registry was altered and something is not allowing the programs to start. After they do start the system runs fine.
I was thinking about doing a system repair but I do not have the copy of Windows XP for that computer. The copy which I do have for my computer is Windows XP with service pack 1(a) and this computer has service pack 3 installed. Is there a way of using this disc to run the repair or am I overlooking something that will get this computer fixed.
