Windows XP forum: Pc restarting

Pc restarting

I have a pc pentium 4 , win xp home with all the updates, 2 gig ram, 320 gig hd , 150 gig free.The problem I have is when I insert a dvd disk regardless if is original or a data disk , the computer is trying to read it and immediately is rebooting the computer. After is rebooting I can acces the drive with no problem. I thought is a hardware issue and I installed a new dvd writer, a new i/o cable and the result is the same.Thinking it may be a power supply problem I disconect eveything exept the hard drive and the dvd writable. Stil the same problem. Now I start to have the same issue with my cd drive.

Please advise.

It is an ibm compatible, approx. 10 years old which worked with no problems until now. I forgot to mention that I checked the power supply voltage and I get +5v, +12v, and -12v as well.I updated the drivers for the dvd writer for the original one which is a Plextor as well as for the new dvd writable which is an LG.

Did you try the old clean off all the vents, heatsinks and replace all heatsink compounds and finally check for all fans working and that no BAD CAPS are in this machine?
