unprotect a folder...

Hi. I have a really big problem of not being able to get my files and folders back from my previous windows xp. Tihs happened because I had windows xp installed on my computer and I made my my documents folder private, and then my windows xp started getting unstable so I just installed windows xp over the existing windows xp folder, and now I cant enter my old my documents folder because it says "Access Denied" all the time and in that folder I got ALL of my important files such as my skool work, musics, setup files, etc... Is there any way I can take off the protecting if I have the password?
