Windows XP forum: Right click causes Explorer crash

run it to fix bugs.

I've tried every suggestion on every forum re the prob with explorer.exe crashing whenever I right-click on a file. The above programs were the only solution that worked.

Plus, they're both Freeware!

You nailed it for me. I uninstalled all divx applications and now it works perfectly. THANKS A MILLION.

2 questions:
1. how did you know divx was the culprit?
and
2. do you know why it causes that problem?

Had the same problem since 3 weeks. I just found a virus... with mcAfee... don't know why it didn't find it before...
The trojan is:
PWS-Ilg.dr in file divx/drdivxregistration.exe

I've battled this one for days, weeks even.
There is a small, but useful program to download on the net. It is called, Shellview.

Once downloaded, open up the program, it will take about a few seconds or more to load the shell files.

Now your list of files will be in category.

The main categories to focus on is "Extension Name" and "Type".

In "Type" you are to focus on the "Context Menu" files.

First step is to disable all the shell files in the list of "Context Menu". Then try right clicking folders, files, even the Start Menu-- You might notice the difference.

Then go back and enable one by one the shell files from the "Context Menu" until you find out which file is causing the problem. Most likely it will end up being a program that has been installed in your computer.

Once you found the buggy program, go to add/remove programs and remove it.

I recently had a similar problem where Windows Explorer kept crashing when I right clicked on any AVI files. I then had to end the process in Task Manager each time and restart Explorer.

Anyway, after several hours of researching I found a resolution and thought I'd share it with you.

I downloaded ShellExView from
h**p://www.nirsoft.net/utils/shexview.html and then opened up.
After disabling many of them one by one and right clicking on an AVI file I was able to discover that the following was causing my crashes.
VIDEO THUMBNAIL EXTRACTOR
I disabled this and now I do not suffer from any crashes.
